Dark Horses of The World Cup

With the World Cup in under a month, now is the time for a brief look at the teams looking to upset the giants of world football.

Belgium have to be the first taken into consideration.

A plethora of talent from both the Premier League and elsewhere at such a young age has made Belgium an exciting team from anyones point of view.

They often utilize a three-at-the-back, allowing for wingers to surge forward and a strong core in the midfield. While Christian Benteke has succumbed to injury, the attack looks formidable with Lukaku on form and looking to prove himself to a number of suitors. Axel Witsel will have an important job to do in the midfield while Thibaut Courtois has been the best goalkeeper in the La Liga for the last couple years.

A young team with strength in each position and an energy unmatched by all in the tournament should see The Red Devils (not Van Gaal‘s Boys) pull an upset or two.

Colombia have been in scintillating form leading up to the world cup.

They finished in second play in CONMEBOL qualifying and did so comfortably. Despite their lack of any real defensive stalwart, they are able to score goals easily and are comfortable enough to use the defense as a foundation to build off of. They will look to use their advantage of having experience in South America to their favor and the draw seemed kind to them.

With a little bit of confidence from passing through the group, the team have the right balance of experience and youth to set Brazil alight with their talent. They would, however, be right in the mix had it not been for the injury of Falcao.

Ivory Coast have always been, ‘the best African team, looking to progress this year.’

Without fail, they have fallen short of this expectation, albeit they were placed in the group of death. The Ivorians will be looking to prove a point, with Didier Drogba experiencing his final world cup as well as the Toure brothers. Both Drogba and the Toure brothers are likely to put on a performance to show the world just how truly talented they are.

They have pacy wingers, enthusiasm and team spirit. Their golden generation has peaked and if they were to advance past their group, they have the ability to shock the world with a resounding triumph over their 31 competitors.
