World Cup Predictions: Group E

ISH soccer writer, Adam Leightman, predicts every match in the 2014 World Cup. Who will win each group? Will Brazil win the tournament they are hosting? Is there a dark horse ready to make a deep run in the tournament? Join International Sports Hub every day as each group is predicted and eventually a country will be crowned champion.

Group E:

Although Group E is labeled as one of the weaker groups this summer, I see it as a very evenly matched group. France has the most talent in the group, but their best player, Frank Ribery, has been recently ruled of the tournament with a back injury. Switzerland went undefeated in qualifying and is currently ranked 14th in the world. Ecuador and Honduras both play in climates similar to the one in Brazil and should give the two teams a slight advantage.

1. France:

In 2010, France had a horrendous World Cup and were knocked out in the group stage. This World Cup, I expect a different result. I expect that Karim Benzema will lead the team with three goals in the group stage. Hugo Lloris will be in top form and will be one of the best goalkeepers at the  tournament.

2. Ecuador:

Ecuador is ready to make some noise at the World Cup this summer. Led by Antonio Valencia, Ecuador will be a team with a lot of pace and a deadly counter attack. Valencia, the captain, will lead the team with two goals as Ecuador reaches the knockout rounds for the first time since 2006.

3. Switzerland:

The Swiss are entering the tournament with a lot of confidence. They won their qualifying group in Europe, and have recent friendly victories over Peru and Jamaica. However, Switzerland will fail to shine in Brazil, come up short in the big games, and fail to qualify for the Round of Sixteen. Gokhan Inler will lead the team and score both of  Switzerland’s goals  in the tournament.

4. Honduras:

Honduras was a very strong team during qualification. However, their recent form has dropped significantly. They lost to Turkey and Israel in their pre-World Cup friendlies last week. The team looks out of sync and I do not think they can recover in time to make it out of the group.
