Copa America: Quarterfinal Predictions

With the Copa America heading into the knockout rounds, ISH Soccer Writer Adam Leightman predicts the 4 quarterfinal match ups.

Copa-America

Chile Vs. Uruguay

The hosts of the tournament take on a country that has won the competition a record 15 times. Both teams have shown signs of life, however Uruguay failed to beat Paraguay in their last group game setting up a strong matchup in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile Chile obliterated Bolivia 5-0 to secure first place in their group. Chile has the home crowd behind them and they should send the host nation into delirium by qualifying for the semifinals.

Chile 2-1 Uruguay

Bolivia Vs. Peru

The surpise of the tournament Bolivia, qualifed for the knockout rounds by drawing Mexico and upsetting Ecuador in Group A. The Group A runners up will face the Group B runners up in Peru. Peru faced a daunting task after losing their first game against Brazil. Peru responded brilliantly by beating Venezuela and holding Colombia 0-0. Peru has looked like the better team this tournament and will qualify for the semifinals.

Peru 1-0 Bolivia

Colombia Vs. Argentina

Colombia looked set to make a magical Copa America run after the World Cup, but unfortunately Jose Pekerman’s men have failed to make an impact on the tournament. They finished 3rd in their group and set up a matchup with Argentina in the quarterfinals (I thought this would be the final). Argentina threw away a two goal lead against Paraguay in the group B opener, but have responded with wins over Uruguay and Jamaica. Leo Messi is determined to win a major tournament for his country and he will take a large step this week.

Argentina 3-1 Colombia

Brazil Vs. Paraguay

Brazil has a lot of damage to make up for after their epic collapse at the World Cup a year go. They face a Paraguay side that has yet to lose a game in this tournament. The tied Argentina and Uruguay and beat Jamaica to finish second in a tough group. Brazil should that they can be dominant again with solid wins against Peru and Venezuela. However, I expect Paraguay to step up and move on to the semifinals.

Paraguay 2 (4) – 2 (3) Brazil
